Toronto is trying to become even less family friendly. For those thinking of moving into the city (if you can afford it) should perhaps reconsider as Toronto is increasing fees for activities specifically related to families.
The city of Toronto is planning massive increases of approximately $7 million in new and existing user fees. This new budget will be going to vote in April. Here is the breakdown of how they want to gouge families who are already living in the city and dissuade families from moving into the city:
* $50 registration for families signing up for city recreation programs for the first time
* New - gym rental fees
* Drop-in swim fees of $2 for adults, $1 for youths and seniors and $5 for families
* $15 for a host of kids’ activities including ball hockey, gardening, gymnastics and learn-to-skate
All this to for an extra $7.1 million into city coffers for 2010. Instead of increasing or adding new fees, they could save that by cutting down salaries of just some of the many bureaucrats in this city (just what do they do, anyway?).
You can read the details here (in pdf)
Want to complain? Here is the procedure: "Individuals who wish to make formal complaints must do so by submitting a complaint and a sworn affidavit to the City Clerk’s office. The affidavit may be sworn at the Registry Office located on the main floor of City Hall at 100 Queen Street West."
Too much work? Feel free to at least rant on Vibe ...

Compared to Vancouver, which has a strong upper class, and a big lower class, with virtually no middle class. I don't see why you would complain..people in Toronto are more of middle class society and the city caters to them in that way, people don't know how good we have it here, a little more fees wont hurt anybody.
