this goes for pretty much most decent-well paying government jobs as these days you will also need a uni degree + other requirements to become a firefighter, cop, paramedic etc because competition is so fierce even if your a minority, its just that minorites have an easier time through the hiring process ...remember alot of jobs are laying off people, and sending them into early retirement so that they can downsize and stick to new reduced budgets
My life's pretty good at the moment i'd have to say. Can't complain. It could always be worse. Just working & going to school, looking forward to university next year. Saving up for a car. Just staying in my own lane i guess :]

I don't know about the rest of thos jobs, but you actually need NOTHING to become a fire fighter.....chances are you won't get in with that nothing, but you can still get direct entry from highschool. I was taking fire protection engineering at seneca, but I decided to switch programs. Basically your best chance of becoming a fire fighter is the 1 year pre-service to fire fighting at seneca. They will 100% look at you after you've taken that.....but then you'd become waitlisted like all the rest. EVERYONE wants to become 1 because it pays well, has exellent pension and benefits, and you only work a week a month. Good career, but long story short, you don't need a degree for that.
Education is key in life. If u you wanna get hired ppl are more likely to hire someone with a degree than someone without. Because the employee is more of an asset that way. Just because the requirement are minimal , you should go for the fullest. Thats how u will get the best out of life.

this may be true still but if I was a recruiter for toronto fire and had a choice between a guy with a degree + minimum requirements vs. someone with just the requirements, I would probably choose the guy with the degree...alot of times its who you know as well as networking, volunteering and higher education are key in setting you apart from the others your competiting with
